An Open Letter to President Obama and Mrs. Clinton from Honduras

Dear Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton;

I am a missionary here in Honduras for the past 13 years.  I am also a retired Air Force Master Sergeant of 22 years.  My pride and devotion to our country, I believe, is unquestionable.  However, you have made me ashamed, not of my country, but of its leaders, specifically you.  How could you possibly make such a rash and irresponsible decision to support a “would be” dictator and Hugo Chavez follower without taking even a moment to investigate the overwhelming evidence that repudiates his lies?

You are, by your irresponsible statements of support for this man, bringing the whole world against a country that has modeled itself after the United States and is doing everything it can to prevent Mr. Chavez from having another foothold in Latin America.  It seems as though you want to help a dictator instead of a lawful, democratic government that has been a US ally for generations.  What are you thinking?

Mr. President and Madam Secretary please take some time and see that you are on the wrong side of this?  If you follow the current course you will destroy a wonderful, free, God fearing, democracy that has lined itself up with the same values as you preach.  This is a matter for the Honduran government to handle not you!  They followed their constitution to the letter and have the right to continue in the way that they decide, not what the UN thinks.

If you will take a moment and look you will see that Mr. Zelaya was given the opportunity to face his accusers in court, but he chose to resign and go to Costa Rica.  He was not sequestered! Most of the “rioters” that have been seen on the news are not Hondurans, but people coming in from Nicaragua to stage things for the cameras.  Eighty to ninety percent of Hondurans are behind their government and do not want Mr. Zelaya back here.  Would you want him as your President?  He is just another puppet of Hugo Chavez.

I listened to another American friend yesterday who has been here for many years longer than I.  He said that the Generals were simply following orders of the Congress and they are devastated that the US, you Mr. President, has turned its back on them.  He said that these Generals had tears in their eyes as they realized that what they had believed about the U.S. was not true.

There are many other Americans here, Sir, that are extremely disappointed and angry with you two.  You are not only on the wrong side, but you have put us in danger.  For the most part the Honduran people are a loving and caring people.&n bsp; They have accepted and even loved us into their culture and family.  However, there is a minority of folks here that will see us as the enemy just because of your statements backing this man.

I have married a wonderful Honduran lady and we have two great kids here, but you have put all of us in a position of defending your actions that have no defense.  Even if my son comes in and says that someone hit him, my first question is “why, what did you do to provoke the action.”  Did you even give Honduras that respect by asking Mr. Zelaya what he did?

All that I and the rest of the American here, along with seven million Hondurans are asking is that you investigate what happene d before you make any more rash statements and that you not allow Mr. Chavez to try and put Mr. Zelaya back in office by force.  This will cause a backlash that could cost you a lot more than just having to read my letter.

Honduras does not have the biggest Armed Force in the world, but I know many of them and I know that they are ready to fight to defend their country Mr. President.

Please Mr. President and Madam Secretary think before you speak.  You influence the entire world with your words, sometimes it is for the good, but this time it was for the bad and you must stop it before disaster comes to Honduras!

Sincerely Disappointed,

J. P. DuBose,
MSgt, USAF, Retired

NOTE:  This message was sent to Mr. Obama directly at the White House.  You are free to use it if you wish to share with your congressman, senators or other goverment officials.

Of course they are on the right side. They are just supporting their fellow leftists. They ARE on the side of Chavez and Castro. It makes absolute sense that they would support Zelaya. Funny, not a peep from the UN about Iran, but let one of their leftist comrades be ousted and they can't wait to get involved.

concerned,, very concerned

The clinton/obama aleigance to Zelaya should not surprise anyone. Chavez and Castro are already heros to the American left.. Can they save Zelaya? It might take some blood in the streets, but to this president and secretary of state, they finally found something worth fighting for.

You can't support the coup and also support democracy!
written by Raquelita, July 01, 2009
You say, "It seems as though you want to help a dictator instead of a lawful, democratic government that has been a US ally for generations." That makes no sense! Pres. Obama is supporting hte idea that governments should be changed through ELECTIONS, not coups! If you really want to support democracy and the principles of freedom the US stands for, then you should oppose the coup, aask Zelaya to return, and then work very hard for the candidate you support to be elected.

It seems right-wingers only like democracy when it produces the results they want, but support coups whenever a leftist gets elected. You can't have it both ways!!!

coup de etat
written by Robert Hawkins, July 01, 2009
Sorry- but why wasn't there a motion for impeachment? Honduras had a legally elected president and no doubt a mechanism for removing him from power. Could you explain how the Honduran government follow the constitution to the letter? Something does not ring true here. As for Chavez it seems that you and he are both are in agreement as to how important he is.

Yes when a coup it's the only way...
written by David Caballero, July 01, 2009
Raquelita, I'm very dissapointed to hear you say that, as most things in life it all depends in the eyes of the beholder, us here in Honduras have been witness to the injustices and abuse of power of the ex-president Zelaya. You are right that goverments should be changed through elections, but when the next elections are in danger, should the people just sit and wait to see what happens? We have had just 26 years of democracy and we didn't wanted to endanger all those years of advance just because of the wishes of one individual, if you come and ask you will find that most of hondurans would have done the same thing in sake of freedom and democracy.

Terrible decision from US president
written by Eleonora Holmes, July 02, 2009
Not to mention the fact of how many Honduran residents of the US voted for Obama and Clinton, and even the ones who could not vote, were so happy he would make a change in history. Well yes, he is making a big change, but for the worse!!

For those who think this was a military coup, IT WAS NOT!!! It was a legal arrest for attempting to break the law!! He was warned many times, and he did what he wanted. Is that legal? Can you blame our people for trying to defend the constitution? Would like your president to do that to your country? If it was legal for him to be re elected by votes in our country, then it would be diferent, BUT IT IS NOT LEGAL. A PRESIDENT IN HONDURAS WORKS FOR 4 YEARS AND THAT IS IT!! We do not have such law in where a president can be re elected and he wanted to force that, for what? So he can be more powerful? Our country does not have the amount of economic status to become comunist, so who do you think would['ve taken charge of Honduras? Chavez.... and we're supposed to just cross our arms and take it? NO WAY!!! Our country is poor and have tons of ignorant people, but we also have the ones who know about our rights, laws and politics, so we are the ones who will defend our country and teach our people how to defend themselves from barbaric as.... who only think about starting wars, Chavez threaten our country to start one if we do not put Zelaya in power again, so who do you think is in power there? Zelaya? or Chavez? Zelaya it is just his puppet, but we're no body's puppet, so sorry for Zelaya because he will not be more rich and wont be able to pay back all the money he took from Chavez and other countries " to help our people" because he already invested it in his own personal life and now he's screwed. After being a complete ass.... to the american, now he comes crying to Obama, " oh, please help me" and Mr. Obama thinking, we do not want more enemies because we need all to be together, he comes and defend his biggest enemy. WIOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank your article it makes us feel better to know taht there are people that do undrstand what is happening here, though at this point I have to say that Honduras is standing strong with our without the support of many leaders who have other interests. That is what it all boils down to, the freedom of a people vs. cheaper oil prices for the US. Has anyone wondered why Raul Castro has asked president Obama to state his position in writing? Why does he feel he has the authority to ask THE president of the United States of America such a thing. It really does make you wonder what is at stake for all these nations that have all of a sudden prefered communism over democracy, and worst yet, condemn a small but SMART country for not allowing communism to solidfy in our country.

Zelaya HAD due process
written by jORGEfROMhONDURAS, July 02, 2009
People who are not well informed skip over the fact that Zelaya HAD due process. As a matter of fact, he had over 40 of his attorneys fight the supreme court ruling deeming his actions uncostitutional. His attorneys even fought for appeals in higher courts who again ruled in favor of the Honduras Constitution.

People who are not well informed, also do not know that during his last days in office, Zelaya had blatantly become an outlaw, PERSONALLY leading an asault with deadly wheapons and theft of material confiscated by Honduras courts.

Is this the kind of Leaders the OAS wants in office ?

Also, uninformed people do not know the fact that Honduras constitution makes a provision of removal of ANY PUBLIC OFFICIAL (does not exclude the president) that is proven to have broken Petrean Articles in our constitution (articles that prevent Chavez-Like Regimes). Remember, Zelaya had 40 lawyers trying to disprove this in court but failed to do so.

So Zelaya DID have his day in court. It may not look like a US impeachment, but it IS proper Rule of Law for Honduras constitution. Please, Mr. Obama, respect this and let Honduras deal with this within our own constitutional laws and not by what you think our laws should be.

Declaring the Kingdom of God in Honduras
written by E. D. Ortiz, July 02, 2009
Dear Family and Friends,

Today, we, in Honduras, are living a very difficult political situation, caused by a few bad Hondurans. The international press, international organizations, the countries in the context of Nations (the OAS), all seem to be against Honduras.

For us, who are and have been living this situation, it is quite painful to realize that when an entire people is finally happy to have decided how they want to live, the rest of the world wants to see it again plunged into misery and subjected to alien ideologies, commanded by Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez as is our case.

What did we do wrong?

Is it now wrong, to depose a president who used the vote the people bestowed with, to violate the Constitution and laws of the Republic? Is it that it is now bad, to depose a president who disrespects and does not subject to the laws of his own country? Is it that it is now bad, to depose a president, who uses a Marxist rhetoric, intending to deceive an entire people, calling his own interests, the interests of the people?

The international community can not be as inquisitor with Hondurans! What do they want? To see us mired in a new Cuba? In a new Venezuela? They can not call this a coup; they can not judge us that way, because what happened in Honduras does not meet the characteristics of a coup of a state, “the taking over of military power and the breaking down of the rule of the law”; that is not what happened, Hondurans, just substituted a Constitutional President by another Constitutional President and restored the rule of law, not broke it. THIS IS NOT A COUP!

The United States, “the great state of the north”, the champion of justice, of ruling and laws, changed their President Mr. Nixon, for a simple case of espionage against his political opponents. Why can´t Honduras change theirs, who although elected by the people, such election did not give him the right or license to
commit felony or to be above the law? Our president lost his state of mind and tried to govern Honduras in the absolutist and centralized style of Louis XIV, but we gave him no time to express, “The State Am I”, because in Honduras the State belongs to the majority!.

I did not want to refer to Ecuador in the case of Abdallah Bucaram, because that was crazier than ours, but I mention it because inconceivably, he is also criticizing Honduras, even though he does not have the moral courage to do so, Correa does not have his own criteria and just responds to orders coming from Caracas.

These same countries, that are critical to us today, should be grateful to the Honduran people because today we have set an example, that the laws in Honduras must be followed and respected at the expense of anything and for any citizen, including the President!

Honduras said NO, and did what Venezuela could not do, what Bolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Dominica were unable to do, and this should serve as an example to minor dictators seeking to take over the Latin American countries through preconceptions brought from Havana and Caracas.

The fact that they want to make us believe that the Pentagon and the CIA, were not familiar with the situation and the causes that gave rise to this outcome is unconceivable. We are no fools, we have already demonstrated it, we´d rather think that we are being called for the restitution of a breach of our constitution, because they are signatories of international treaties which are demanding so and they do it just to meet a requirement, but that like us, they are pleased with the action taken by Honduras. We only hope that as time passes, criticism will cease and give way to admiration which today they find hard to express, anyway Honduras will not draw back, at whatever cost, even to the shedding of the blood of the last of the Hondurans. Today, more than ever becomes a lifetime sentence one of our independence hero, Francisco Morazán, "Posterity will do us justice."

Dear Family and friends overseas, today we are not welcome in the concert of nations, when all we did was to decide to live the way we want to live. We need to change this perception, so I am forced to ask you for a favor; copy this note, post it on an email and send to your friends in your address book who are out of Honduras and ask them the same, to pass it on. Many people in Honduras, at this time, are doing the same.

Honduras needs people to know about what happened and change their minds towards us, and in this way, the task of national reconstruction will be faster and less painful.

Greetings everyone!

written by m funes, July 11, 2009
So which country will pick up my tab and that of thousands of others if they force this idiot back into power..everything that I have in my life is invested in Honduras and should Zelaya come back this will be in the power of others ...I guess there wont be many countries fighting over that I am sure. so what happens to MY freedom and democracy..I guess all these opposing countries as just as bad as Chavez..opening their mouthes before finding out the reals facts and CNN..well you are the biggest communists ever!!! I guess I got it all wrong..the ones that you think are conservative and democratic are really the "lefties" just waiting to come out of the closet...I applaud the American citizens that have supported Honduras...you know that if someone doesn't do something then it is only a matter of time that the USA could be in the hands of Chavez with freedom lost in the "Land of the Free"....

Very Well Spoken
written by Kim Fults, July 18, 2009
Sgt. DuBose,
Your letter was very well spoken and said what my heart was feeling and what I think many americans that are in Honduras or have visited Honduras feel. I have visited Honduras twice and have fell in love with that country and would love to move there. In fact this happened the day after I left there. People were already talking about what Zelaya was doing then. They were concerned what was going to happen to there great country. And I had heard so much of what you had said about how they loved America and had patterened alot of what they do after us, I am sure they are disappointed in us.
I guess all we can do is pray that God will take care of you all there and I know He will. But also pray that this will turn out peaceful and no more bloodshed.
Be safe and God bless you.

Well said
written by Alex, August 01, 2009
The letter states what I feel also. I am Honduran but also a US resident. It angers and confuses me to see Obama/Hillary siding with FARC, Ortega, Chavez, Castro, Morales, Correa, and ALBA. The world will never be the same if the US and the thugs I mentioned get what they want. Sad, sad days for democracy and freedom in our continent. Let's pray to God!
